Explosive Edge Rush: A DE Drill for Bedford Bulldogs
This summer, Div I programs like the Bedford Bulldogs are focusing on developing their defensive ends' edge rush skills. One key drill to improve explosiveness and speed is the 'Boxer Shuffle' drill. Set up a series of small cones or markers in a zig-zag pattern, 5 yards apart. Players start at the first cone, shuffling their feet laterally while maintaining a low stance. As they approach the second cone, they explosively burst forward, accelerating to top speed. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaching cues: 'Keep your feet light, shuffle like a boxer!' and 'Accelerate through the cone, don't slow down!' This drill translates to game performance by improving a DE's ability to quickly change direction and explosively accelerate off the line, making them a more formidable edge rusher.
