Summer Training Tip: Tight End Route Running for Exeter Blue Hawks

๐Ÿ“ Exeter Blue HawksยทMonday, July 20, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

To improve route running for tight ends, the Exeter Blue Hawks coaching staff recommends the 'Route Box Drill'. Divide the tight ends into pairs, with one player as the receiver and the other as the defender. Set up a 10-yard box with cones, with each corner marked 'A', 'B', 'C', and 'D'. The receiver starts at the center of the box, while the defender lines up at the corner of 'A'. On the coach's signal, the receiver runs a specific route (e.g., out, in, or post) to the defender, who attempts to stay in front of the receiver. The coach provides real-time feedback on footwork, hand placement, and body positioning. Perform 3 sets of 5 reps for each route, with a 30-second rest between sets. This drill translates to game performance by improving the tight end's ability to create separation and read coverage.
