FridayNightPulse Training Tip: Exeter Blue Hawks' Linebacker Agility Drill
At Div II programs like the Exeter Blue Hawks, linebackers need to be quick, agile, and able to change direction on a dime. To improve these skills, the coaching staff has developed a drill that targets the hips and legs. The 'L-Drill' consists of 3 sets of 10 reps: 1) Start in a 3-point stance, then quickly change direction to the left, shuffling 5 yards to the left while keeping the back foot planted. 2) Immediately change direction to the right, shuffling 5 yards to the right while keeping the back foot planted. 3) Repeat steps 1-2, focusing on quick footwork and explosive acceleration. Coaching cues include 'Fast feet, not fast legs' and 'Keep the back foot planted, don't let it swing.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the linebacker's ability to quickly close gaps and pursue ballcarriers.
