Pirates' Pre-Season Prep: QB Drills for Non-Public A Success

๐Ÿ“ Seton Hall Prep PiratesยทThursday, July 16, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

At Seton Hall Prep, Pirates' quarterback coach, Mike Smith, emphasizes the importance of precision and accuracy in the pre-season. One key drill for QBs is the 'Quick Release' progression. Set up 5-6 cones in a zig-zag pattern, 5 yards apart. QBs start at the first cone, focus on a target (e.g. a coach's chest), and quickly release a pass to a receiver running a 5-yard out route. Start with 3 sets of 10 reps, focusing on a quick release and follow-through. Coaching cues: 'Quick, crisp, and on target.' As QBs improve, increase the distance to 10 yards and add a defender to the route. This drill translates to game performance by improving QBs' ability to quickly diagnose coverage and deliver accurate passes under pressure.
