FridayNightPulse: 'Thunder in the Gap' Drill for 6A Linebackers
At the top 6A programs like Cleveland Storm, linebackers are expected to be tackling machines. To improve their ability to fill gaps and make tackles in space, we recommend the 'Thunder in the Gap' drill. Set up three cones in a triangular formation, with the linebacker starting at the top of the triangle. The coach or trainer will start at the bottom of the triangle and make a lateral cut towards the linebacker, forcing them to fill the gap quickly. The linebacker must make contact with the coach or trainer at the bottom of the triangle. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, with a 30-second rest between sets. Coaching cues include 'fill the gap' and 'get your hat on the ball.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the linebacker's ability to read the play and make tackles in tight spaces.
