Defensive End Dominance: The 'Rush and React' Drill
As the AA season approaches, Long Island Lutheran Crusaders defensive end coach, Mike Smith, is fine-tuning his players with a high-intensity drill that simulates the chaos of a live game. The 'Rush and React' drill is designed to improve DEs' speed, agility, and reaction time. Players will perform 3 sets of 5 reps, with 30 seconds of rest between sets. Each rep consists of a 10-yard sprint down the line, followed by a 180-degree cut to the quarterback, and a final 5-yard dash to the ball carrier. Coach Smith emphasizes the importance of 'eyes on the quarterback' and 'hands up, ready to react.' This drill translates to game performance by replicating the rapid-fire sequence of rush, cut, and reaction that defensive ends face on every snap. By mastering this drill, Crusaders DEs will be better equipped to disrupt opposing offenses and make game-changing plays.
