Explosive Power for RBs: The 3-Step Hurdle Drill
For AA programs like Monroe Woodbury Crusaders, developing explosive power in running backs is crucial for success on the gridiron. To improve acceleration and top-end speed, we recommend the 3-Step Hurdle Drill. This drill targets the glutes, hamstrings, and quads, translating to increased power and speed in game situations. To set up the drill, place 3 hurdles in a row, spaced 5 yards apart. Have the RB start at the first hurdle, then jump over it, landing softly on the balls of the feet. Immediately, jump over the second hurdle, focusing on quick turnover and explosive power. Finally, jump over the third hurdle, emphasizing speed and agility. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, resting 2 minutes between sets. Throughout the drill, emphasize proper landing technique and quick turnover. This drill will help RBs like the Crusaders' top backs develop the explosive power needed to break tackles and take it to the house.
