FridayNightPulse Training Tip: 'Rush the Pocket' Drill for Defensive Ends
At AA programs like Aquinas Institute Little Irish, defensive ends need to be able to rush the quarterback with speed and power. The 'Rush the Pocket' drill is designed to improve this skill. Players will start in a 3-point stance 5 yards off the line of scrimmage. On the coach's signal, they will explode off the line, taking 3-4 steps to the quarterback. The twist: the quarterback will be standing still, but the DE will be wearing a weighted vest (10-15 pounds). This adds resistance to simulate the power of a running back. Perform 3 sets of 5 reps, resting 2 minutes between sets. Coaching cues: 'Explosive off the line,' 'Keep your eyes on the quarterback,' and 'Drive your feet.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the DE's ability to generate power and speed in a live situation, allowing them to get to the quarterback more quickly.
