FridayNightPulse Training Tip: Developing DE Dominance with the 'Anchor and Attack' Drill

๐Ÿ“ Massillon TigersยทSunday, July 19, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

At Div II programs like Massillon Tigers, defensive end players need to be able to anchor the edge and attack the quarterback. To develop this skill, we recommend the 'Anchor and Attack' drill. Set up cones 5 yards apart, with a quarterback at the line of scrimmage. The defensive end will start in a 3-point stance, with their inside foot forward. On the snap, they'll drive their feet into the ground and 'anchor' their inside foot, keeping their body vertical. Next, they'll 'attack' the quarterback, using a quick step and extension of their outside arm to disrupt the play. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, with a 30-second rest between sets. Coaching cues include 'drive your feet' and 'keep your body vertical.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the defensive end's ability to hold their ground and generate pressure on the quarterback.
