DeShawn Johnson Commits to SMU
Mentor Cardinals tight end DeShawn Johnson has committed to Southern Methodist University. The Class of 2027 prospect, who stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 225 pounds, chose SMU over offers from other Power Five programs. Johnson's commitment to the Mustangs is a result of his desire to play for a team that utilizes a pro-style offense, which aligns with his skillset and experience in high school. He also cited the opportunity to contribute immediately as a freshman, given the team's depth chart at tight end. Additionally, SMU's academic program and reputation for producing well-rounded graduates were factors in Johnson's decision. Johnson previously held offers from the University of Kentucky and Purdue University, but ultimately chose SMU as his college destination. He is expected to enroll at SMU in the fall of 2027.
