Quarterback Quick Release Drill for 5A Programs
For 5A quarterbacks like Stillwater's top signal-callers, a strong quick release is crucial for success in the OSSAA playoffs. To improve this skill, Stillwater's quarterbacks coach recommends the following drill: '3-Step Quick Release.' Divide the quarterbacks into pairs, with one player as the passer and the other as the receiver. The passer starts 5 yards behind the receiver, who is facing them. On the coach's signal, the passer takes 3 small steps back, then immediately releases the ball to the receiver. The receiver should be running a 5-yard out route. The passer should focus on quick footwork and a smooth release, keeping their eyes downfield. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps. This drill translates to game performance by allowing quarterbacks to develop a consistent, quick release under pressure, which is essential for beating defenders and completing passes in tight windows.
