Explosive Power for RBs: Bixby Spartans' 5A Summer Drill
The Bixby Spartans' coaching staff has developed a drill to enhance the power and explosiveness of their running backs. The 'Box Jump-Step Drill' targets the key muscles used in cutting and accelerating through tight spaces. Set up a series of boxes or benches 1-2 feet apart. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, alternating legs. Start with a box jump, landing softly on both feet. Immediately step into a lateral direction, using the inside foot to push off the ground. Focus on quick turnover and explosive acceleration. Coaching cues: 'Box jump, soft landing, step, push off.' This drill translates to game performance by improving RBs' ability to change direction quickly and accelerate through tight spaces, making them more effective in the open field.
