Summer Speed and Separation for 5A Wide Receivers

๐Ÿ“ Bixby SpartansยทThursday, July 23, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

As the Bixby Spartans prepare for another dominant season, wide receivers coach, John Smith, shares a drill to improve speed and separation on the field. The 'L-Cut and Dash' drill targets quickness and agility, essential for 5A programs like Bixby. Set up four cones in a zigzag pattern, 5 yards apart. Players start at the first cone, performing an L-cut (planting outside foot and cutting inside) while maintaining top speed. After the second cone, they dash 10 yards to the third cone, repeating the L-cut. Complete 3 sets of 5 reps, resting 60 seconds between sets. Coach emphasizes proper footwork, explosive acceleration, and body control. This drill translates to game performance by allowing receivers to quickly change direction and create separation from defenders, a crucial skill in the high-scoring 5A division.
