Boosting Kicking Performance with the 'Ramp-Up' Drill
At 6A programs like Central Catholic Rams, kickers must be prepared to perform under pressure. To improve their accuracy and power, coaches can implement the 'Ramp-Up' drill. This exercise targets the kicker's leg strength, flexibility, and technique. To set up the drill, place a series of 3-5 cones or markers 5 yards apart, forming a diagonal line. The kicker starts at the bottom cone and kicks a ball up the line, increasing the distance with each rep. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, focusing on a smooth, powerful motion. Coaching cues include 'drive through the ball' and 'follow through with your eyes.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the kicker's ability to generate power and control on longer field goals and extra points.
