Building a Stronger Line: The 3-Box Drill for 6A OL
For 6A programs like Sheldon Irish, dominating in the trenches is crucial to success. To improve their blocking prowess, OL coach Mike Johnson recommends the 3-Box Drill. This exercise targets the upper body, lower body, and core simultaneously, mimicking the physical demands of a game. To set up the drill, players line up in pairs with a box or pad in front of them. Coach Johnson instructs them to perform a 3-step approach, followed by a block, and then a 3-step recovery. The coach provides real-time feedback, emphasizing proper footwork, hand placement, and body positioning. Aim for 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds of rest between sets. This drill translates to game performance by enhancing OL players' ability to explosively drive block, maintain balance, and recover quickly to the next play.
