Defensive End Dominance: The 'Swim and Dive' Drill
This summer, 6A programs like Sheldon Irish can take their defensive end play to the next level with the 'Swim and Dive' drill. This high-intensity workout targets speed, agility, and strength, translating to improved pass rush and run defense in the fall. The drill consists of 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds rest between sets. Players start in a 3-point stance, then explosively 'swim' forward 5 yards, before immediately 'diving' back to their original position. Coaching cues focus on maintaining proper technique and generating power from the hips. As players fatigue, reduce the distance or increase the number of reps. This drill simulates the quick bursts of speed and agility required to successfully rush the quarterback or stop the run. By incorporating the 'Swim and Dive' drill into their pre-season training, DEs at 6A programs will be better equipped to dominate on the field this fall.
