Tight End Training: 'Slant and Go' Drill for 6A Programs

๐Ÿ“ Sheldon IrishยทTuesday, July 21, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

For tight ends at 6A programs like Sheldon Irish, developing a quick release off the line and the ability to separate from defenders is crucial. To improve this skill, coaches can implement the 'Slant and Go' drill. Players will start in a 3-point stance, then quickly release to a 5-yard slant route. As they reach the slant, they'll plant their outside foot and accelerate down the sideline. Coaches should emphasize a low, wide base and a focus on speed over size. Run 3 sets of 10 reps, with a 30-second rest in between. This drill translates to game performance by teaching tight ends to quickly create separation and make plays down the field. It also improves their ability to read defenses and adjust their routes accordingly.
