West Linn Lions TE Drill: 'Route Runner' for 6A Dominance
As the West Linn Lions prepare for their 6A title run, Tight End coach, Mark Smith, emphasizes the importance of route running for his players. The 'Route Runner' drill is designed to improve TE's ability to separate from defenders and create separation. Set up 3-4 cones in a zig-zag pattern, 10 yards apart. Have the TE start at the first cone and run through the course, focusing on quick feet and sharp cuts. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, resting 30 seconds between sets. Coaching cues include: 'Keep your head on a swivel,' 'Drive your feet,' and 'Use your hips.' This drill translates to game performance by allowing TEs to create separation and get open for their quarterback. It also improves their ability to read coverage and adjust their route accordingly.
