FridayNightPulse Training Tip: Tight End Targeting Drill
At the Division II level, tight ends play a crucial role in a team's passing game. To improve their skills, we recommend the Tight End Targeting Drill. This drill focuses on the TE's ability to locate and catch the ball in traffic. To set up, divide your team into pairs with a quarterback and tight end. The quarterback will throw a 5-yard pass to the tight end, who must use their hands and body to shield a defender. The defender will attempt to bat the ball away or intercept it. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds rest between sets. Coaching cues include 'eyes on the quarterback' and 'keep your hands inside.' This drill translates to game performance by teaching tight ends to be reliable targets in crowded areas and to make plays in traffic. It also improves their ability to read the quarterback and adjust to the ball in mid-air.
