South Pointe Stallions WR Training Tip: Route Running with a Twist
At 4A programs like the South Pointe Stallions, wide receivers need to be precise and explosive on the field. To improve their route running skills, try this drill: "Flood and Cut". Set up three cones in a zig-zag pattern, with the first cone 5 yards from the starting point, the second cone 10 yards from the first, and the third cone 15 yards from the second. Start with 3 sets of 5 reps. On each rep, have the receiver start at the first cone, run a 5-yard out route, then cut sharply to the second cone, and finally speed up to the third cone. Coaching cues include: "Keep your eyes on the quarterback, stay low, and explode out of the cut". This drill translates to game performance by improving the receiver's ability to quickly change direction and accelerate down the field, making them a more difficult target for defenders to cover.
