FridayNightPulse: Explosive Edge Rush Drill for 4A Defensive Ends
This summer, 4A programs like Gaffney Indians can improve their defensive end play with the 'Rip and Rip' drill. This dynamic exercise targets speed, agility, and power, translating to game-changing edge rushes. Divide DEs into pairs, with one player as the 'defender' and the other as the 'offensive lineman'. The defender starts in a 3-point stance, while the OL begins in a neutral position. On 'go', the OL 'rip' moves 3-4 feet to the right, then immediately 'rip' to the left, mimicking a quarterback's movement. The defender must quickly close the gap, using footwork and hand placement to stay in the OL's hip pocket. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, resting 60 seconds between sets. Coaches, emphasize 'keep your eyes on the quarterback' and 'stay low to the ground'. This drill will help DEs develop the speed and agility needed to outmaneuver opponents and get to the quarterback.
