Quarterback Readiness Drill for 5A Programs: Building Pocket Presence
At FridayNightPulse, we're highlighting a critical drill for 5A quarterbacks to refine their pocket presence and decision-making skills. The '3-Step Pocket Escape' drill is designed to simulate game situations and improve a QB's ability to read defenses. Set up a 10-yard pocket with cones or markers. Start with 3 sets of 10 reps. On each rep, the QB begins in the pocket, takes 3 steps back, and then escapes to their left or right, depending on the coach's call. Coaching cues: 'Keep your eyes up, QB! Read the defense, then react!' This drill translates to game performance by teaching QBs to stay calm under pressure, read the defense quickly, and make accurate decisions on the fly. By incorporating this drill into their pre-season training, 5A quarterbacks like Dorman's own QB can develop the skills needed to succeed in the SCHSL playoffs.
