Boosting RB Performance: Dutch Fork's Power Shuttle Drill
At Dutch Fork High School, our 5A Silver Foxes program focuses on developing elite running backs. One key drill that translates to game performance is the Power Shuttle. This drill improves acceleration, deceleration, and change-of-direction speed. To run the Power Shuttle, set up two cones 10 yards apart. Have the RB start at one cone, then sprint to the other, touching it with their hand. Immediately, they must change direction and sprint back to the first cone, touching it with their hand. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaching cues include: 'Accelerate out of the gate,' 'Drive through your inside foot,' and 'Change direction quickly, but explosively.' This drill simulates the quick changes of direction that RBs face in game situations, such as breaking tackles or making cuts on the edge.
