Route Running Mastery for 4A WRs: The 'Quick Release' Drill

๐Ÿ“ Lakewood GatorsยทSunday, July 12, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

As the 4A season approaches, WRs at programs like Lakewood Gators need to refine their route running skills. One effective drill to achieve this is the 'Quick Release' drill. Set up two cones 5 yards apart, with a third cone 10 yards beyond the second. Players start at the first cone, then sprint to the second cone, making a sharp cut to the third cone. Focus on a quick release off the line, using the outside foot to plant and the inside foot to push off. Complete 3 sets of 10 reps, with a 30-second rest between sets. This drill translates to game performance by improving WRs' ability to quickly separate from defenders and create space for the QB. It also enhances their agility and speed, allowing them to make sharp cuts and accelerate downfield.
