Explosive Route Running for 4A WRs: The 'Lateral Shuffle' Drill

๐Ÿ“ Lakewood GatorsยทTuesday, July 21, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

As the 4A football season approaches, receivers at programs like Lakewood Gators can gain a competitive edge with the 'Lateral Shuffle' drill. This exercise targets speed, agility, and route-running precision. To set up the drill, divide the receivers into pairs with one player as the ball carrier and the other as the defender. The ball carrier starts at the 5-yard line and runs a 5-yard out route, then shuffles 3 yards laterally to the right, and back to the 5-yard line. The defender must stay within 3 yards of the ball carrier throughout the drill. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, resting for 30 seconds between sets. Coaching cues include 'Keep your feet light and quick' and 'Change direction on a dime.' This drill translates to game performance by improving receivers' ability to quickly change direction and beat defenders on short routes.
