CB Dominance: Lakewood Gators' Summer Camp Drill to Improve Press Coverage

๐Ÿ“ Lakewood GatorsยทFriday, July 24, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

At Lakewood Gators' summer camp, cornerbacks will focus on the 'Shadow Step' drill to improve press coverage skills. This drill consists of 3 sets of 10 reps, with a 30-second rest between sets. Players will line up 5 yards off the receiver, then take a small step back with their outside foot, keeping their inside foot planted. As the receiver runs a 5-yard out route, the cornerback must quickly recover and mirror the receiver's movements, staying within 1-2 yards of their body. Coaching cues include 'eyes on the receiver' and 'stay low.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the cornerback's ability to quickly close gaps and stay in phase with receivers, making it difficult for them to get open.
