Tight End Training: Lakewood Gators' 4A Prep Drill

๐Ÿ“ Lakewood GatorsยทSunday, July 26, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

This summer, 4A programs like the Lakewood Gators are focusing on developing their tight end positions. One key drill to improve TE skills is the 'Route Box Drill.' Divide players into pairs, with one player as the receiver and the other as the quarterback. Set up a 10-yard box with cones, with each corner marked as a different route (in, out, post, and deep). The quarterback will call a route and the receiver must run to the corresponding corner of the box. The drill starts with 3 sets of 10 reps, focusing on quick releases and explosive acceleration. Coaching cues include 'get your head around,' 'stay low,' and 'release off the ball.' This drill translates to game performance by improving route recognition, footwork, and separation from defenders. It also enhances the quarterback-receiver connection, a crucial aspect of any successful offense.
