Brandon Valley Lynx Linebacker Drill: 'Shut Down and Fill'

๐Ÿ“ Brandon Valley LynxยทTuesday, July 28, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

As the Brandon Valley Lynx prepare for the upcoming 11AA season, linebacker coach, John Smith, has been emphasizing a key drill to improve their ability to shut down the opponent's running game and fill gaps in the defense. The 'Shut Down and Fill' drill involves setting up cones in a zig-zag pattern, with two players starting at either end. On the coach's signal, the players must quickly close the gap and fill the space between the cones, while also keeping their eyes on the ball carrier. The drill is performed for 3 sets of 10 reps, with a 30-second rest in between. Coaching cues include 'shut down the hole' and 'fill the gap'. This drill translates to game performance by improving the linebackers' ability to read the play and react quickly to the ball carrier.
