Oakland Patriots' WRs Get Ready for the Gridiron with the 'Route Runner' Drill

๐Ÿ“ Oakland PatriotsยทSaturday, July 4, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

Coaches at 6A programs like the Oakland Patriots know that developing their wide receivers' route-running skills is crucial for success on the field. To improve their players' agility and precision, the Patriots' staff has implemented a drill they call the 'Route Runner.' This exercise consists of 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds of rest in between sets. Players start at the line of scrimmage, then sprint to a designated spot 10 yards downfield, where they plant their outside foot and pivot to face the quarterback. From there, they take 3-5 steps to the next mark, mimicking a slant route. Coaches should emphasize proper footwork and body positioning throughout the drill, which translates to game performance by allowing WRs to quickly change direction and create separation from defenders.
