Summer Camp Spotlight: Whitehaven Tigers WR Drill
At the top 6A programs like Whitehaven Tigers, wide receivers must be prepared to separate from defenders and make plays in traffic. One drill that can help achieve this is the 'Route Box Drill'.
Objective: Develop quick footwork and body control in tight spaces.
Setup: Divide receivers into pairs, with one player as the receiver and the other as the defender. Place a series of cones in a box formation, with each cone 3 yards apart. The receiver must start at the edge of the box and navigate through the cones, using different routes (in, out, and up).
Execution: The receiver will run 3 sets of 5 reps, with a 30-second rest between sets. The defender will attempt to stay in front of the receiver, using hand placement and footwork to stay tight. Coaches will provide feedback on foot speed, agility, and body control.
Translation to Game Performance: This drill translates to game performance by teaching receivers to quickly change direction and separate from defenders in tight spaces, a crucial skill for success in the 6A classification.
