Tight End Training: The 'Box Out' Drill for 6A Programs
As the Whitehaven Tigers prepare for the upcoming season, tight end players can benefit from incorporating the 'Box Out' drill into their training regimen. This drill focuses on developing the strength and agility needed to secure crucial blocks and receptions in the red zone. To set up the drill, divide the tight ends into pairs, with one player as the blocker and the other as the defender. The blocker must 'box out' the defender by keeping their feet shoulder-width apart and their hands up to protect the ball. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, with a 30-second rest between sets. Coaching cues include 'Keep your feet wide' and 'Hands up, hands up.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the tight end's ability to shield defenders and secure passes in tight spaces.
