Kicking it Up a Notch: Westlake Chaparrals' 6A Kicking Drill

๐Ÿ“ Westlake ChaparralsยทWednesday, July 1, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

Westlake Chaparrals' kicker is a key component to their 6A success. To improve their accuracy and power, Coach Thompson implements the 'Drop Step Drill.'

**Objective:** Develop a consistent drop step and follow-through technique.

**Setup:** Place 3 cones in a row, 5 yards apart. The kicker starts 10 yards back.

**Execution:** On the snap, the kicker takes 3-4 steps back, then drops their non-kicking foot into a 'L' shape. As they plant their kicking foot, they focus on a smooth, arcing motion. The kicker repeats for 3 sets of 10 reps.

**Coaching Cues:** 'Keep your eyes on the target,' 'Drop step, don't drag step,' and 'Follow through, don't pull back.'

**Game Translation:** This drill improves the kicker's ability to maintain balance and generate power through a consistent drop step. It translates to game performance by allowing the kicker to make accurate, high-arcing kicks from distance.
