Tiger Tread: Gunter RBs Get Ready for Gridiron with the 'Tunnel Run' Drill
The Gunter Tigers are gearing up for another strong 3A season, and running backs coach, Mike Johnson, has a drill that's sure to get his backs in top shape. The 'Tunnel Run' drill is a high-intensity, agility-focused exercise that targets the quick changes of direction and speed required of a 3A RB. To set up, create a 10-yard long 'tunnel' using cones or markers. Players start at one end, then sprint through the tunnel, planting their outside foot and exploding out the other side. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds rest between sets. Coaching cue: 'Focus on quick feet and explosive acceleration.' This drill translates to game performance by improving RBs' ability to quickly change direction and maintain top-end speed, making them more elusive in the open field.
