Building a Stronger Aledo Bearcats O-Line: The 'Anchor and Punch' Drill
As 5A programs like the Aledo Bearcats prepare for the upcoming season, one key area of focus is the development of a dominant offensive line. To improve their power and efficiency, Coach Thompson recommends incorporating the 'Anchor and Punch' drill into their summer training regimen. This drill targets the critical sequence of events that occurs when a lineman must anchor against a defender and then explosively punch them off the ball. To set up the drill, pair each lineman with a defender and have them line up in a 3-point stance. On the whistle, the lineman must anchor their feet and engage the defender, then quickly punch through with their chest and drive their feet into the ground. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, focusing on proper technique and explosive power. This drill translates to game performance by allowing linemen to develop the strength and quickness necessary to control the line of scrimmage and create holes for their running backs.
