FridayNightPulse Training Tip: Southlake Carroll DEs Master the 'Rush and React' Drill

๐Ÿ“ Southlake CarrollยทThursday, July 16, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

To improve defensive end speed and reaction time, 6A programs like Southlake Carroll are incorporating the 'Rush and React' drill into their pre-season training. This drill consists of 3 sets of 10 reps, with a 30-second rest between sets. Players line up 10 yards off the quarterback, focusing on a specific target (e.g., the center). On the snap, they rush towards the target, then immediately react to a coach's whistle, changing direction to pursue a secondary target (e.g., a running back). Coaching cues include 'Rush the pocket!' and 'React, react, react!' This drill translates to game performance by improving DEs' ability to read the offense, quickly close gaps, and make tackles in space.
