Bear Down: CB Drills for Aledo's 5A Dominance

๐Ÿ“ Aledo BearcatsยทThursday, July 16, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

For cornerbacks at top 5A programs like Aledo's Bearcats, staying one step ahead of receivers is key. To improve reaction time and closing speed, Coach Thompson recommends the 'Ladder Shuffle.' Set up a ladder with 5-6 rungs, spaced 3 feet apart. Players start at the bottom, shuffling through the ladder in a zig-zag pattern (3 reps). Next, have them perform a 10-yard sprint to the top, then back down (3 sets). Coaching cues: 'Keep your head on a swivel, eyes on the receiver.' This drill translates to game performance by replicating the quick changes of direction and bursts of speed CBs need to stay with receivers. It also simulates the mental focus required to stay alert and react to the ball in traffic.
