Speed and Agility for 6A S Players: The Katy Tiger Shuttle Drill
Summer is the perfect time for high school S players to focus on speed and agility training. At 6A programs like Katy Tigers, coaches are already preparing their athletes for the upcoming season with a drill that targets quick changes of direction and rapid acceleration. The Katy Tiger Shuttle Drill involves setting up four cones in a diamond formation, with the player starting at one corner. The coach calls out a color (red, blue, green, or yellow) and the player must sprint to the corresponding cone, then immediately change direction and sprint back to the starting point. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, resting for 30 seconds between sets. Coaching cues include 'explosive start,' 'quick feet,' and 'aggressive change of direction.' This drill translates to game performance by allowing S players to develop the speed and agility needed to stay one step ahead of defenders and make game-changing plays.
