Summer Speed and Agility for 6A WRs: The 'Caveman Cut' Drill
As the American Fork Cavemen prepare for the upcoming season, wide receiver coach, John Smith, has developed a drill to improve speed, agility, and route-running skills. The 'Caveman Cut' drill consists of 3 sets of 5 reps, with 30 seconds of rest between sets. Players start in a 3-point stance, 5 yards from a cone. On the whistle, they sprint 10 yards, then make a sharp 45-degree cut to the left or right, around the cone. As they pass the cone, they must quickly change direction and accelerate to top speed. Coaching cues include 'Fast feet, quick turns,' and 'Cut and go.' This drill translates to game performance by improving a WR's ability to quickly change direction and accelerate, making them a more elusive and effective target for quarterback throws.
