Explosive Acceleration for 5A RBs: The 'L-Cone Shuttle' Drill
As the 2026 high school football season approaches, running backs at 5A programs like Highland Springs Springers are looking for ways to improve their acceleration and get a step on defenders. One effective drill to add to your summer training regimen is the 'L-Cone Shuttle.' This drill targets the quick change of direction and explosion that RBs need to succeed in today's fast-paced game. Set up three cones in an L-shape, 5 yards apart. Have the RB start at the bottom of the L, then shuttle through the cones, focusing on explosive acceleration out of each turn. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, resting 30 seconds between sets. Coaching cue: 'Drive through the turn, don't just turn.' This drill translates to game performance by allowing RBs to develop the speed and agility needed to break tackles and make big plays in space.
