Burlington Sea Horses Coach Sees Flag Football as Legitimate College Pathway for Local Athletes
Burlington Sea Horses head coach Sarah Johnson believes the NCAA's Emerging Sports for Women program has opened doors for local female football players. The addition of women's flag football in January 2026 has led to increased interest in the sport. Nebraska, the only Power 4 school with a fully funded D1 varsity program, is a prime destination for top talent. NAIA programs like Ottawa University (KS), Keiser University (FL), and Midland University (NE) offer active scholarships. UT Arlington is a developing D1 program in Texas. Johnson advises Burlington's top players to focus on developing their skills and exploring these opportunities. 'It's not just about playing flag football,' Johnson said. 'It's about being part of a program that can offer scholarship opportunities and a path to the next level.'
