Raiders' CB Coach Shares Game-Changing 'Shadow' Drill for D-I Defensive Backs
The Rutland Raiders' defensive backfield is known for its exceptional speed and agility, and a key component of their pre-season training is the 'Shadow' drill. This high-intensity exercise is designed to simulate the quick changes of direction that CBs face on the field. To run the 'Shadow' drill, divide your CBs into pairs and have them start in a 3-yard split stance. On the whistle, the defender must quickly close the distance to the receiver, staying 'shaded' to their hip. Complete 3 sets of 10 reps, resting 30 seconds between sets. Coaching cues include 'Stay on their hip!' and 'Close the gap, don't let them get open!' This drill translates to game performance by improving the CB's ability to quickly react to the receiver's movements and stay in phase with them.
