FridayNightPulse: CB Drills for 3A Success
Eastside Catholic Crusaders cornerback coach, Mark Johnson, shares a crucial drill for developing elite cornerbacks in 3A programs. The 'Mirror and React' drill targets reaction time, footwork, and spatial awareness. Set up a ladder with 5-7 feet between each rung. Have the cornerback stand 5 yards from the ladder, facing it. The coach or trainer will call out a color (red or blue) and the cornerback must quickly react, sprinting to the corresponding rung and back to the starting position. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, resting 30 seconds between sets. Coaching cues: 'Fast feet, fast mind' and 'Stay low, stay quick.' This drill translates to game performance by improving cornerbacks' ability to quickly close gaps and stay in phase with receivers. It also enhances their spatial awareness, allowing them to anticipate and react to receivers' movements.
