Unlocking TE Potential: Graham-Kapowsin Eagles' Summer Drill
For 4A programs like the Graham-Kapowsin Eagles, having a dominant tight end can be the difference-maker in a close game. To develop their TE skills, head coach and strength coach can implement the 'Route Box Drill'. This drill focuses on quick releases, precise routes, and explosive acceleration. Set up a 10-yard box with cones, with four routes: in, out, deep, and post. Divide the TEs into pairs, with one player as the receiver and the other as the defender. On the whistle, the receiver must release quickly and run the designated route. The defender must react and cover the receiver. Start with 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds rest between sets. Coaching cues include 'quick feet' and 'eyes on the quarterback'. This drill translates to game performance by improving reaction time, route running, and separation from defenders. It's a valuable addition to any TE's summer training regimen.
