Unlocking Defensive End Dominance: The 'Rip and Rebound' Drill
At 3A powerhouses like Eastside Catholic Crusaders, defensive ends are the backbone of the defense. To take their game to the next level, we're introducing the 'Rip and Rebound' drill. This exercise targets the explosive acceleration and reaction time required to chase down ball carriers. Set up two cones 10 yards apart, with a third cone 5 yards beyond the second. Players start at the first cone, then 'rip' off the line, sprinting to the second cone. Upon arrival, they must quickly change direction and 'rebound' back to the third cone, mimicking a tackle. Complete 3 sets of 10 reps, resting 30 seconds between sets. Coaching cues: 'Rip like a jackrabbit!' and 'Rebound like a lion!' This drill translates to game performance by improving reaction time, acceleration, and the ability to quickly close distance on ball carriers.
