Step-Up Cover Drill for 3A CBs
For cornerbacks at 3A programs like Eastside Catholic Crusaders, the step-up cover drill is a key component of pre-season training. This drill focuses on quick footwork, agility, and reaction time. The setup: two cones 5 yards apart, with a third cone 5 yards beyond the second. The CB starts at the first cone, then quickly steps up to the second cone, planting their outside foot and turning their body to face the target. The coach throws a pass to the target, and the CB must react and cover the distance to the third cone. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds rest between sets. Coaching cues: 'Step up, turn, and go!' and 'Keep your eyes on the target!' This drill translates to game performance by improving the CB's ability to quickly close the gap and stay in phase with the receiver.
