Boosting Bellevue's Kick Coverage: The 3-Step Punt Return Drill

๐Ÿ“ Bellevue WolverinesยทMonday, July 13, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

This summer, Bellevue Wolverines' special teams coach can improve their kick coverage unit with a targeted drill. The 3-Step Punt Return Drill focuses on agility, acceleration, and decision-making. Divide the kick coverage unit into pairs, with one player as the 'returner' and the other as the 'blocker.' The returner starts 10 yards deep, with the blocker 5 yards off to the side. On the whistle, the returner takes three steps to their left, then immediately accelerates to the right, using a 'hitch' step to change direction. The blocker provides a 'wall' for the returner to hit, simulating a punt block. Repeat for 3 sets of 5 reps. This drill translates to game performance by improving the returner's ability to read the block and change direction quickly, while the blocker develops their timing and technique. This drill is a crucial addition to Bellevue's pre-season training regimen.
