Lockdown Drills for 4A Cornerbacks: Skyline Spartans Prep for Season

๐Ÿ“ Skyline SpartansยทWednesday, July 29, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

Cornerbacks at 4A programs like the Skyline Spartans need to be quick, agile, and able to stay with receivers down the field. To improve their lockdown skills, we recommend the following drill: 'Shadow and Mirror.' Divide the defensive backs into pairs, with one player as the receiver and the other as the cornerback. The receiver will run a 5-yard out route, while the cornerback is tasked with staying within 2 yards of their hip. The drill consists of 3 sets of 10 reps, with a 30-second rest in between sets. Coaching cues include 'stay on their hip' and 'don't let them get separation.' This drill translates to game performance by allowing cornerbacks to develop the ability to stay with receivers in man coverage and react quickly to changes in direction.
