Waunakee Warriors' Wide Receiver Workout: Building Speed and Agility

๐Ÿ“ Waunakee WarriorsยทMonday, July 20, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

At Waunakee High School, Coach Thompson emphasizes the importance of speed and agility for his 4A wide receivers. One drill that has shown significant improvement in his players is the 5-10-5 Shuttle. This drill targets the quick changes of direction and acceleration required for success in the open field. To set up the drill, players line up at the 5-yard line, then sprint to the 10-yard line, touch the line, and backpedal to the 5-yard line. They repeat this process for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaching cues include 'explosive start,' 'stay low,' and 'change direction quickly.' This drill translates to game performance by improving a player's ability to quickly accelerate and decelerate, making them more elusive for defenders and increasing their chances of making big plays.
