Explosive Acceleration Drill for Running Backs at AA Programs
As the Spring Mills Cardinals prepare for the upcoming season, running backs will need to focus on explosive acceleration to break through tackles and gain extra yards. The 'L-Drill' is a simple yet effective exercise to improve acceleration. Set up a 10-yard course with cones or markers. Players start at the 5-yard line, then accelerate to the 10-yard line, planting their outside foot at the 8-yard line. They immediately change direction, planting their inside foot at the 5-yard line. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaching cues include 'quick feet' and 'explosive drive.' This drill translates to game performance by allowing running backs to quickly change direction and accelerate through small spaces, making them more elusive to defenders. It also improves their ability to break tackles and gain extra yards.
