Summer Training Tip: CB 'Shadow' Drill for AAA Programs
At top AAA programs like George Washington Patriots, cornerbacks need to be prepared to mirror receivers' every move. To improve their reaction time and footwork, CBs can try the 'Shadow' drill. Set up cones in a zig-zag pattern, 5 yards apart. Have a coach or trainer simulate receiver movements, changing direction quickly. The CB must mirror the receiver, staying 1-2 yards off. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, resting 30 seconds between sets. Coaching cues: 'Stay on their hip,' 'Mirror their movement,' and 'Keep your eyes on the ball.' This drill translates to game performance by allowing CBs to develop their ability to stay with receivers in man coverage. It also improves their ability to read the quarterback's eyes and anticipate the receiver's next move.
